Portville, New York
PCS Wall of Fame Class of 2013 Inductee
She was born Mildred Jean Anderson on August 13, 1930, at Cuba
Hospital. We know her as Jean. She was the first born of three children to
Carl and Edith Anderson. She has one younger sister, Phyllis, and one
younger brother, David.
She attended school in Olean City Schools (K thru 12). She is a member
of OHS Class of 1948. She attended Keuka College for two years
majoring in Biology with a minor in Business. It was the Business minor
that would serve her life’s work best here in Portville.
She was approached in the Spring of 1950 about the possibility of
working in the main office (of the old high school). The job was to begin
on the first day of school! She was interested, she accepted the position
and she held that position until the birth of her daughter, Jill (Chadwick) in
1956. She stayed home to raise her family, which included her son, Todd
(Chadwick), who was born in 1958. Both children are PCS graduates.
In 1967, after an 11 year hiatus, she returned to PCS as the Secretary to
Lee Frair, and remained in that position (Secretary to the Superintendent)
until her retirement in 1991.
Along the way, she met and married her present husband, Jim Torrey on
New Years Day, 1978. They have been happily married for 35 years.
These days Jean keeps busy with volunteer work, hobbies and interests.
She is a member of the Rivers Edge Church, volunteers at the Portville
Free Library, and helps with the elderly in our community. She is a
member of the “Silver Sneakers", making weekly trips to the Olean
YMCA. And she is a long-time member of the Keynote Chorus.
Jean is a great and caring woman, she looks back on her life with few
regrets and great humility. She’ll be the first to tell you “God keeps me
(As presented by Gary Swetland for the Hall of Fame at the ALumni
Banquet in 2013).
