Portville Hall of Fame
At the age of 12, Gene worked on the milk truck for his family business, the Spring Hill Dairy. A
member of the PHS Class of 1945, he joined the Navy in his senior year. Returning to Portville in
1946, he went to work full time at the Spring Hill Dairy as a third generation dairyman. A lover of
vocal music, he sang with area Barbershop Choruses. Gene served as Eastern Star Patron, the first
President of the Local Lion's Club, and a member of the Olean Exchange Club, the Portville American
Legion, and the Olean Elks Club. His Dairy Bar and Restaurant provided the first job for hundreds of
young people in the area.
