Portville Hall of Fame

Louise Merrick graduated from Portville Central School in 1940.  She obtained
her teaching degree in Physical Education from Ithaca College in 1944 and
went on to obtain her degree in Podiatry from Long Island University in 1947,
where she received the Surgical Medical Award for the graduating class of
1947.  In 1970, Dr. Merrick obtained her Doctorate degree from M. H. Lewis
College (later renamed New York State College), College of Podiatric
Medicine.  After teaching at the New York College of Podiatry for 17 years
and practicing the profession of Podiatry in New York City, borough of the
Bronx for 31 years, Dr. Merrick retired in 1979.

Following her retirement, she was involved with Nursing Home inspections
through the five boroughs of New York City associated with Mayor Ed Koch’s
Department of Aging.  In 1985, Louise moved to Florida, where she enjoyed
her retirement activities as well as extensive travel throughout Europe and the
Middle East.  She continued as an active participant in Hospice of Lake-Sumter
County of Florida and with her local public library until her death in March of
