Lawyer, banker, Civic Leader, Dies

PORTVILLE – John E. Dusenbury of 65 Temple St. died Wednesday (Aug. 17, 1988) in the Olean
General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Buffalo on Feb. 22, 1921, he was a son of Donald and Marie Page Dusenbury.  On April 22,
1950, in Greenwich, Conn., he married the former Anne loomis, who survives.

A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. Dusenbury was a graduate of the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa.,
Cornell University, and Cornell University Law School.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Air Force in the South Pacific and European
theaters before being discharged as a first lieutenant.

Mr. Dusenbury was a practicing Olean Attorney since 1949, first as an associate of the late
Creighton Andrews, then in his own law firm, and in 1954 he became a partner with J. Richmond
Page.

In 1962, he was named trust and investment officer at First National Bank, now Manufacturers
Hanover Trust Co., retiring in 1982.

Mr. Dusenbury was a former member and past president of the board of trustees of the First
Presbyterian Church of Olean; member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portville; Bartlett Country
Club; Genesee Valley Hunt of Geneseo; Belle Hollow Hunt of Hornell; Cattaraugus County and New
York State Bar Associations; past chairman of the Olean Chapter of the American Red Cross, past
chairman of its board of directors and was a regional fund director; past director and charter member
of the Cattaraugus County Mental Health Association; past member of the board of directors and
treasurer of the Olean General Hospital; past chairman of the Olean Civil Defense; and a member of
the board of trustees of the Portville Free Library and board of trustees of the Portville Historical
Society.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Henry M. Dusenbury of Norwood, Colo., Van W. L.
Dusenbury of Greenwich and Peter B. Dusenbury of North Hartland, Vt.; a daughter, Katharine
Dusenbury of Boston, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial visitation will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the family residence, 65
Temple St., where a memorial service will be held Saturday (Aug. 20, 1988) at 11 a.m.  Burial will be
in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portville Fire Department, Portville Free Library,
Olean General Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
