Portville Hall of Fame
David Dunbar was born October 24, 1945, in Olean, N.Y., to Ozzie and Jo
Dunbar.  Peg was born on  December 5, 1947, in Kingston, N.Y.  Dave is a K-
12 PCS member of the class of 1963.  Peg is K-12 class of 1964 Kingston
Public schools graduate.

As a student, Dave went to Cattaraugus County All-County Chorus every year
from 7th through 12th grade. He made the All-State Chorus from grade 10
through grade 12.  He also lettered in Varsity Baseball as a High School senior.
He was awarded both a Dresser Clark scholarship and Regents scholarship
upon graduation at Portville.

Peg was a member of the Kingston Choir, the Kingston Drama Club, the
Library Club and the Mid-Hudson Camerata Choral church choir.  Peg was an
outstanding academic student with high achievement in music in high school.
And she remembers that she scored just a little bit higher than Dave in every
measurable that there was.

Dave and Peg met at All-State Chorus in 1963.  Then they attended Fredonia
State College together as music majors. They were married at St. Andrews
Methodist Church in Westons Mills in March of 1968.

They completed their graduate studies at Fredonia and St. Bonaventure
University (SBU).  Dave began his teaching career at Ellicottville Central in
1967, and left there to become the vocal music director at PCS in 1970.  He
remained at Portville until his retirement in 2001.  Along the way, Dave and
Peg served as music and choral directors for SBU from 1969 to 1973.

Together, they produced and directed a number of musicals at PCS, among
them, “Fiddler on the roof”, “110 in the shade”, “South Pacific”, “Once Upon
a Mattress”, “Man of La Mancha”, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”,
“Oliver”, and many more.

Dave was awarded the Alcas Outstanding Teacher in the Greater Olean Area
Award in 1994 and was nominated for the NYS Outstanding Teacher Award
for 1994-1995.

For many All-County and All-State Choruses throughout New York State,
Dave conducted and Peg served as accompanist for all three levels of
Elementary, Middle School, and High school.  Throughout a teaching and
directing career of excellence, Peg was always the accompanist.

Dave and Peg served as the choral directors at the First Presbyterian Church of
Portville for many years. They conducted the Genesee Valley chorus and the
Keynote Chorus for many years as well.  From 2000 to 2012, they worked for
“American Music Abroad” where they have guided exceptional musical talent
of all ages on performance tours of Europe.

They are most proud of their two sons, David and Kevin, both born and raised
in Portville, and the opportunities they had to serve the Portville-area youth in
their musical development.  In their retirement, they continue to write, direct,
conduct and perform, particularly for their church and church organizations in
their new home in the Carolinas.
